Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Tried doing lip trills in the past but could not get it. Thanks to you, I managed to do it! Have subscribed already. Love to sing. But I don't know how to do it correctly.

This is great, but I would avoid the lip trill exercise. Here's why: Lip trills foster breathiness, and should only be used with someone who has excessive subglottal pressure. Let me explain physiologically. A lip trill is essentially making a reed or vibrating mechanism out of the lips. If you hold your finger in front of your mouth while doing a lip trill, you will feel the air blowing by your finger...the amount of air that is required to trill the lips. This lip 'reed' is on top of the same tube of air that the vocal folds are on top of further back in the air tube. When the vocal folds are phonating properly there is an economy of air (the vocal 'reed' is like an oboe reed...the proper sound of a 'double reed' instrument, which the voice technically is, is very focused and nasal-like). I.e., if you are phonating properly the voice is not breathy but very focused, and there is almost no air going by your finger if you hold it in front of your mouth when singing properly. In order to provide the amount of air for a lip trill, you would have to be much more unfocused (i.e., breathy) at the vocal folds to allow enough air to support the lip trill further along in the same air tube. I have had students complaining that they have not been able to remove breathiness from their voice, while all along they were reinforcing a breathy voice by practicing lip trills daily. In defense of this knowledgeable clinician, it is common practice to use lip trills in voice studios. I used them until I learned about this. If you want to loosen your lips and tongue, you can do these exercises unvoiced (i.e., with just air and no phonation from the vocal folds). The other exercises are good to do, though, and I would continue them.

Thank you so much for all your efforts! I love the content. Question: I have a laryngitis, is it ok if I speak from time to time? becus I have to use my voice during the day quite a lot. Will I be able to recover my voice that way? or I need to shut it for 3-4 days completely?

Resting Your Voice Is The Single Most Important Factor In Healing Laryngitis And Other Reasons For Losing Your Voice. Irritation And Inflammation Need Time To Resolve, Avoiding Using Your Voice Gives Your Vocal Cords The Chance To Recover. Try Not To Talk For A Day Or So; If You Must Speak, Use Your Typical Volume.

I have had some troubles with my voice that they say stem from vocal tension. Right now it is hurting while I speak, so I tried this. I'm a singer so I'm familiar with this. Before the apparent vocal strain I did no belting and I had a very healthy singing routine, which is why this came as such a surprise. However, I can feel on my throat that my voice box, or area around that, feels sensitive when I touch it. I also feel like I have a lump in my throat. Any thoughts on this? I have a booked time to a speech therapist (there's nothing wrong internally, I did a laryngoscopy), but I won't be seen until September and I have my first EP to record vocals for. Today I started hurting just after speaking on the phone for 10 minutes. When this was at it's worst, I could barely speak at all for 2 weeks. If you have any advice, I'd love to hear.

Recording long audio makes my voice tired, so my voice changes gradually. After finishing the recording, when I check the audio, the last part doesn’t match the first part, and it sounds weird. I have to record long audio, but I’m facing this problem. What should I do? Please help me.

I drink a gallon of water a day, rarely coffee, non smoker all my life (but with other lung issues). I don’t tolerate spicy (not even black pepper) but my throat is still dry all the time. Recently diagnosed mtd, finally, after dealing with these effects for over 14 years. but I’m now realizing that I’ve also simply had trouble swallowing bread and things like dry chicken (always preferred dark meat bc it was more moist) probably bc of the dry throat. My doc swears I’m dehydrated- but how much more water do I have to drink? 😂 I don’t drink soda or tea etc. just water. Just strange. Just subbed to your page, thanks for all your info. I haven’t started my doc referred speech therapy yet.

Madam, I am writing from India. I am 56 years old. I am an asthmatic patient. Therefore, I have to use a steroid inhaler twice a day. I have been using this steroid inhaler for the last twenty years. As a result, my voice has deteriorated. The flexibility of my vocal cords has been lost. Naturally, my voice has broken. It is difficult to speak, and I cannot produce proper sounds. Can the exercises you suggested help me? Can you provide any special guidance for my problem?
